An early general election was held on 26 April 2009 in Ecuador following the approval of a new constitution in a referendum held on 28 September 2008.〔http://english.people.com.cn/90001/90777/90852/6533033.html〕 President Rafael Correa ran for his first term under the new constitution. Former president Lucio Gutiérrez ran as the candidate of the January 21 Patriotic Society Party.
